Judge's widow testifies at death penalty hearing
Murder TrialRelatives and friends of a judge and court reporter killed in a 2005 shooting at Atlanta's Fulton County Courthouse took the stand Thursday in the penalty phase of the gunman's trial.

Claudia Barnes testified about losing her husband, the judge who was shot by Brian Nichols.

Claudia Barnes, widow of Fulton County Superior Court Judge Rowland Barnes, recalled asking permission to hold her husband's hand one last time before his body was cremated.

Duncan: 'I didn't want to appeal'
Joseph Jet DuncanBOISE - Federal prosecutors are trying to toss out the appeal filed by stand-by attorneys for admitted murderer Joseph Duncan, saying Duncan never wanted to appeal his death sentence and the attorneys acted without his permission.

“The decision to appeal is solely that of the defendant and cannot be made for him by counsel,” U.S. Attorney Tom Moss argued in a motion filed this afternoon.

Duncan has submitted a letter to the judge, dated last Saturday, saying, “This is to inform the court that if any appeal is initiated on my behalf it is done contrary to my wishes.” He signed it, “Thank you, Joseph E. Duncan III.”

Duncan appeals death sentence
Joseph Jet DuncanBOISE – Joseph Duncan is appealing his death sentence to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Duncan stood silent when the sentence was handed down in August, after he pleaded guilty to all charges. His terse notice of appeal gives no reason for his decision.

Duncan was sentenced to death three times for the 2005 kidnapping, sexual exploitation and murder of 9-year-old Dylan Groene. He also received three life terms in federal prison for kidnapping and molesting Dylan and his then-8-year-old sister, Shasta Groene, who survived.

Groene home slated for demolition
Joseph Jet DuncanShoulder-high weeds obscure the front entry, but the house where a North Idaho murder spree began still stands, easily visible to travelers passing on Interstate 90 just east of Coeur d'Alene.

Lee McKenzie Wood's son, Mark McKenzie, was murdered in the house at Wolf Lodge Bay in a 2005 attack that also killed his fiancée, Brenda Matthews Groene, and her 13-year-old son, Slade. "I want the house torn down," Wood said. "It's just eating me alive that it's still standing, and it's going on four years."

She's likely to get her wish. Attorneys say they no longer need the house for potential evidence in the case against convicted killer Joseph Duncan. It could come down "in the very near future," a spokeswoman for the Idaho Transportation Department, which now owns the house, said Wednesday.

Serial killer to stand trial in another slaying
Ronald DominiqueTHIBODAUX – The serial killer sentenced two months ago to eight back-to-back life sentences for killings in Terrebonne was transferred to the Lafourche jail last weekend, where he will await trial for a murder authorities say he committed in that parish.

Ronald Joseph Dominique, 44, who is suspected of raping and strangling as many as 23 men in south Louisiana over a decade, faces trial in Lafourche District Court for the first-degree murder of 27-year-old Christopher Charles Sutterfield. Though authorities believe he was killed in Lafourche, Sutterfield’s body was found Oct. 15, 2006, near the Tippy Canal Boat Landing on La. 69 in Iberville Parish.

Lafourche District Attorney Cam Morvant II would not say whether his office intends to seek the death penalty for Dominique, adding that he intends to consult with Sutterfield’s family.

Texas killer linked to Cleveland murders
Reginald PerkinsA man set for execution in January in Texas for killing one woman very likely blazed a 28-year trail of murder from Cleveland to Fort Worth, strangling at least six women, detectives in the two states have concluded.

All of the victims have ties to death row prisoner Reginald Perkins, who lived in Cleveland in 1980 when three women were strangled three months apart, all in homes just a half-mile west of Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Two other strangulations were in 1991 in Texas. The last came 10 years later, also in Texas.

Jennings teen identified as 7th victim
Unsolved MurdersJust 17-years-old Brittney Gary is now the youngest of seven women found dead in the Jennings area since 2005. Monday evening, Jeff Davis Parish Deputy Coroner, Dr. Charles Deese, confirmed the identity of the body recovered Saturday as Gary.

While preliminary autopsy results have not yet been released to law enforcement, this new development comes as no surprise. You'll remember officials said tattoos found on the recovered body were matches of those Brittney Gary was known to have had. But in the end, it's believed that dental and medical records helped confirm her identity.

All the women traveled in the same circle and led similar lifestyles. Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff Ricky Edwards says while he has his own theories, he's not ready to say this is the work of a serial killer.

Madman's notes throw new light on Ripper case
Jack The RipperAfter years of secrecy, the Broadmoor authorities have released the medical records of a Victorian madman who was suspected of being the serial killer known as Jack the Ripper.

Thomas Hayne Cutbush was a strange, disturbed and violent youth who was diagnosed as insane in 1891 and remained in Broadmoor until his death in 1903. During the period when the Ripper was on the rampage in Whitechapel, east London, Cutbush was wandering the area's streets. And the Ripper, whoever he was, did not kill again after Cutbush was locked up.

Visitors to the Berkshire Records Office in Reading can inspect the 26 documents that make up the records Broadmoor kept about Cutbush, as well as the letters from Ripper investigators pleading to see the documents.

FBI profilers called in to work on 1987 Broward child murder case
Unsolved MurdersInvestigators working on the recently re-opened Julie Magliulo child murder case said today that they're considering several possibilities, including whether a serial killer may be responsible for the 21-year-old slaying.

The FBI announced Tuesday it is helping the Broward Sheriff's Office find who might have abducted the 3-year-old girl from near her home in the 6000 block of Southwest 19th Street, in North Lauderdale, on June 8, 1987.

Her skeleton was discovered 10 months later in a remote field near U.S. 27 and State Road 84.

Former sailor gets death penalty for East Bay murders
Anthony McKnightOAKLAND — Anthony McKnight smiled and openly laughed this week as an Alameda County Superior Court judge sentenced the 54-year-old serial killer and rapist to death for killing and raping five women in 1985.

Bringing an end to a saga that horrified victims' families for more than two decades, Judge Jeffrey Horner followed through on a jury recommendation and sent McKnight, a former Navy sailor, to San Quentin's death row.

Horner made his decision Monday afternoon after almost a day of legal wrangling and emotional presentations from the victims' families, said Jim Meehan, senior deputy district attorney.
