THE GRANNY KILLER
Australia has seen some bizarre serial killers in its history, but there has been nothing to compare with John Wayne Glover, a maniac who killed six and molested dozens of old women.
Glover was a well known and respected member of the community. An English Immigrant, he was married with two daughters, was employed, a charity worker, and lived in the wealthy Northern Sydney suburb of Mosman. Despite this seemingly normal face he presented to society, in the late 1980’s he ran a campaign of terror, killing 6 elderly ladies, as well as bashing and molesting many others.
Glover started his crimes in 1962 when he repeatedly bashed two old ladies around the head and body. He was apprehended before anything worse could be done to his victims. He was convicted 3 years later of "Peeping Tom" offences and given 6 weeks jail. He did not come under Police attention for another 25 years, but Police are sure he could "assist with their inquiries" into the deaths of at least five other old ladies during this period.
In 1970 Glover married, and shared a house with his wife’s mother. By all accounts the Mother-in-Law made life hell for Glover. To make things worse, in 1982 Glover’s mother, whom he despised, migrated from England to live with him. He later said that "just the thought of having both of them under the same roof was more than anyone could stand." His mother soon died of breast cancer, which Glover was also diagnosed with soon after. He then developed prostrate cancer which made him impotent.
Glover then started his recorded war against the elderly with the bashing of a 84 year old women in January 1989. He knocked her down and stole her purse. As he did on all future occasions, he spent the money on poker machines. The first murder was on 1 March 1989. Spotting an old lady entering a retirement village, he crushed her skull with a hammer repeatedly, and stole $100. Ten weeks later he struck again, attacking an 84 year old lady as she entered her apartment, bashing her head against the concrete. He then removed her pantyhose and strangled her. For some unknown reason, he then laid her walking stick and shoes neatly at her feet.
Police now knew there was a serial killer on the loose, but wrongly surmised it was a drug addict looking for easy targets. Glover then changed his ways for a while, molesting the elderly in their beds at nursing homes. Glover had access to these places through his work as a Pie Salesman. However the lure of killing soon became too much for him, and he started again.
Another old lady was bashed on 8 August 1989, and on 18 October he attacked another 84 year old woman. she survived, but told Police her assailant was a young man, and gave a detailed description- completely the opposite of Glover. While Police were looking for a young skinny man, the chubby 50 year-old Glover killed again, fracturing an 85 year old woman’s head by smashing it with a hammer, and stole $300.00 from her. As he did on all previous occasions, Glover left no clues to his identity at the scene. Victim number 4 was eighty one years old, found dead after he grabbed her from behind at a retirement home. He dragged her into an alcove, and repeatedly slammed her head into a concrete wall. After tying her pantyhose around her neck he stole $60.00 from her purse. He killed again soon after; spotting a 92 year old woman struggling down a street with shopping bags, he followed her to her front door and murdered her in the same way as his other victims. He slipped up this time; a bloody footprint was left behind by him. This, along with a more accurate description by survivors of his previous attacks, gave a more accurate description to Police. After being seen molesting an elderly patient in a retirement village, Police asked him to come in for questioning. He panicked, and went home and attempted suicide. Part of a note he left behind said "no more grannies".
Police knew he was their man but could not prove it yet. After recovering and being interviewed, they gave him the impression they were no longer interested in him. They followed him for several weeks but he kept out of trouble, only stopping occasionally to look at old women.
In March 19 1990 he went into the house of a middle-aged lady friend at 10.00am. Police watched the house for 8 hours before deciding to take action and storm in. When they did, they found the woman’s head bashed in by a hammer and with pantyhose tied around her neck. Glover was in the bath, having slashed his wrists. He was revived and later charged with 6 counts of murder.
Glover pleaded Not Guilty at his trial by reason of insanity. When asked why he did it, he said " I don’t know; I just see these ladies and it seems to trigger something. I just have to be violent towards them." The jury only took 2 hours to find him guilty, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment, with no possibility of parole.
