Stanley Dean Baker
On July 13, 1970, California Highway Patrol officers received reports of a hit-and-run accident at Big Sur. Three persons had been injured in one car, while two long-haired males sped away in another, fleeing the scene of the crash. Patrolmen found two longhairs walking down a nearby road and noted similarities in the descriptions. Under questioning, one suspect readily confessed involvement in the accident, startling police as he added, "I have a problem. I'm a cannibal ."

To prove the point, Stan Baker turned his pockets out and palmed a human finger bone -- removed, he said, from his most recent victim in Montana. Baker's sidekick, Harry Allen Stroup, was also carrying a bony digit, and the pair were taken into custody on suspicion of homicide. Investigators in Montana found the mutilated remains of victim James Schlosser in the Yellowstone River, his heart and several fingers missing from the scene.

The case was grim enough, but Baker was not finished talking, yet. According to his statement, he had been recruited by Satanic cultists from a college campus in his home state of Wyoming. An alleged member of the homicidal "Four Pi movement," Baker had sworn allegiance to the cult's master -- known to intimates as the "Grand Chingon" -- and he had committed other slayings on the cult's behalf. There had been human sacrifices, he reported, in the Santa Ana Mountains, south of Los Angeles. Displaying supposed cult tattoos, Baker also confessed participation in the April 20, 1970 murder of Robert Salem, a 40-year-old lighting designer in San Francisco. Salem had been stabbed 27 times and nearly decapitated, his left ear severed and carried away in a crime that Baker attributed to orders from the Grand Chingon. Slogans painted on the walls in Salem's blood -- including "Zodiac" and "Satan Saves" -- were meant to stir up panic in an atmosphere already tense from revelations in the Manson murder trial.

Baker, 22, and his 20-year-old companion were returned to Montana on July 20. Convicted of murder, both were sentenced to prison, where Baker continued his efforts on behalf of the cult. Authorities report that he actively solicited other inmates to join a Satanic coven, and full moons seemed to bring out the worst in Stanley, causing him to howl like an animal. He sometimes threatened prison guards, and was relieved of homemade weapons on eleven separate occasions, but administrators still saw fit to let him travel through the prison system, teaching transactional analysis to other inmates. Harry Stroup discharged his sentence and was released in 1979; Stanley Baker was paroled to his native Wyoming six years later, requesting that his present whereabouts remain confidential.

I went to high school in Sheriday, Wyoming with Stanley Dean Baker. I'd like to keep up with where the sicko resides at all times. Because ifhe ever shows up at my door, I will . . . react with extreme prejudice. I was into science and once showed Baker how to use a magnifying glass to burn a hole in his exam paper. The next day, he showed up with his own magnifying glass and proceeded to shine the sunlight on the backs of boxelder bugs crawling across his desk. They'd slow down, stop, and then . . . pop. I was NOT surprised to learn years later about his escalation to canibalism. Selah.

I went to school in Sheridan Wyo. with Dean Baker for 12 years...and yes he went by the name of "Dean" Baker because his Dad's name was Stanley and Stanley was my barber. I was in his Cub Scout den and his mother was our den mother. His parents were very nice people but he was a very disrespectful and bullying type of person. Harry Stroup was on my Little League baseball team and his father was our coach. Harry obviously changed later in life but when I knew him, he was also a good person. Drugs and a bad influence from Dean changed him. Dean was not a good person and his behavior later in life belied that fact. The last I heard of him, he was in Minnesota and heavily into native american spiritualism. He isn't in the same league as a Ted Bundy or Arthur Allen. He is a drug crazed whacko from a small town in the west.

Damn and to think they are walking around out there free. I always keep my door locked and now I know the reason why. TOO MANY FUCKING WEIRDO'S OUT THERE . Always call before showing up at my doorstep. I might not let you in. Shock
Thank's Cowboy and DestroyingAngel for the information. I love knowing as much as I can about people like these. Wink

What up everybody. It makes you wonder if it is ok to be in a worldful of people. I rather be in a worldful of hungry alagators then a worldful of hungry humans. At least you will know the alagators habitat. I don't trust anybody no more.

I found this site while doing some research. Stroup and Baker killed my cousin, James Schlosser, in Montana. I think it is just disgusting that they went free. My cousin actually picked them up as they were hitchhiking. You know the 70s. No fear at that time.

I was working as an EMT in Sheridan, Wyoming during the summer of 2005. Sometime in June we got called to Harry Stroup's residence for a "possible suicide" of a middle aged man with a gunshot wound to the head. When we arrived, he was lying on the floor near the door in a large pool of blood. The bullet wound was from a .22 pistol at about a 45 degree angle up through the right side of his jaw. There was no exit wound, so the bullet must still have been up in there. He was still struggling to breath when we got there.

Harry was outside, surrounded by sherrif's deputies, but not in handcuffs. As far as I know he was taken to the station for questioning but not arrested or charged with anything. Apparently, it really was a suicide attempt, althought I find it awfully coincidental that this man (known to be a chronic IV drug user by area law inforcement) chose to commit suicide at the house of Sheridan's only convicted cannibal. The victim was flown to Billings and as far as I know survived with some motor and sensory problems similar to what you might see in a stroke. I was really surprised that NONE of this was ever reported in the Sheridan newspaper.

Later that night, the paramedic working with me said that he thought Harry had been acquitted of or had something to do with a vehicular manslaughter case sometime after being released from prison in the 1979. He also said that he came accross a half naked man running down the middle of the road late at night it Story, WY. When he asked the man what he was doing, he just said "Harry Stroup is trying to kills me." I think he said this was sometime in the 1990's but I don't remember how that story ended or anything else about it.

On a separate note, his residence was just as described by Shifty above. There are about three trailer houses arranged in a C-shape with tons of junk piled up in the middle. I was pretty busy while we were inside his house, but I remember a very nice looking aged pinewood bar with a large bull elk mounted on the wall above it. He also had some nice white carpet, which I imagine had to be replaced after this incident.

He is locally known to some people as "Uncle Fingers" because of the fingerbones found in his pocket when he and Dean Baker were arrested in California. I saw today that he has been sentenced to almost 5 years in prison for tampering with a witness. It was a synopsis of a news release from the Wyoming District of Criminal Investigation and did not say what this was in relation to, but I would bet it has sometime to do with what jickjax was talking about above.

On the subject of sentencing, why was it that Harry Stroup didn't get life for the murder with Dean Baker? I believe I remember that there were bite marks on the finger(s) in his pocket when he was arrested in California. There is a good explanation of what happened with the murder in Montana in a book called "Death in Yellowstone" under the chapter about human-caused deaths. If that is true, I wonder what loophole in Montana law gives cannibals less than a life sentence...
