2nd serial predator on loose |
|
A serial killer, robber and rapist may be on the prowl in Phoenix and may have struck 18 times, police said Friday.
The disclosure came on the heels of an announcement Thursday in an unrelated investigation that added six more cases to a growing tally of random shootings.
The grim bottom line: Two serial predators may be on the loose in Phoenix and elsewhere in the Valley, according to police.
Investigators believe that based on the evidence, one of the offenders may be linked to 18 violent crimes, including four murders, seven sexual assaults and seven robberies from Aug. 6 through May 1.
The sexual assaults may be the work of a sexual predator police dubbed last year as the "Baseline Rapist" because of attacks near Baseline Road in south Phoenix but also elsewhere in Phoenix.
On Dec. 12, the rapist may have carried out his first murder with the fatal shooting of Tina Washington, 39, a mother of two who was teacher at Cactus Preschool, 3920 E. Southern Ave., police said.
More recently, police believe that two killings on March 15 may be tied to the same man.
The two victims, Chao "George" Chou, 23, and Liliana Sanchez-Cabrera, 20, last were seen about 10:30 p.m. the previous day at Yoshi's restaurant, 24th Street and Indian School Road, where they worked.
Their bodies were found in about a mile apart, the man in the 3200 block and the woman in the 2200 block of East Indian School Road , police said.
Both had been shot, police said.
Investigators at that time said the homicides possibly were linked, but police cautioned Friday that conclusive connection for all 18 crimes hasn't been established.
"We are extremely concerned with the serious and violent nature of these offenses and its effect on the community," said Sgt. Lauri Williams, a police spokeswoman.
Investigators have developed similarities based on a description of the suspect and his methods, she said.
However, details will not be released at this time in order "to maintain the integrity of these cases," Williams added.
Police have announced bare details of the ongoing investigation "to make the public aware of these crimes and what appears to be some similarities," she said.
The investigation is separate from a string of serial shootings during the past year in Avondale, Tolleson and Phoenix that have left four people dead, police said.
There are 25 cases in which, in addition to the murders, five people have been wounded and three horses and five dogs have been killed, police said.
Police said Friday that the suspect in the murders, robberies and rapes has been described in some of the earlier incidents as having a bald or shaved head.
They said that, in the later incidents, he had long hair, possibly a wig. |
