Missing women may be victims of Nepal serial killer

Police in Nepal believe a killer is preying on female foreign tourists in Kathmandu after a French woman and a German woman both disappeared.

The Foreign Office has already warned British visitors "to use the utmost caution" in the area where the two women disappeared and "not to travel there alone".

French diplomats first raised the alarm, discovering blood, clothing and other items belonging to the two in Nagarjun Forest, a wildlife reserve and royal retreat five miles from the Nepali capital.

The first to disappear was Celine Henry, 31, from France, who signed the visitors' register at Nagarjun on Sept 3, but failed to sign out.

Her family reported her missing to the French embassy in Nepal on Oct 7.

French officials later discovered Miss Henry's name in the Nagarjun register and the next day the French ambassador, Michel Jolivet, went to retrace her steps.

According to the deputy superintendent of police, Pitambar Adhikari, it was Mr Jolivet who discovered a water bottle, black jersey and a bra and called the police.

They found fresh blood stains and an area of flattened grass nearby. What the French had found was not Miss Henry's murder scene but apparently that of Sabine Gruneklee, 32, from Germany.

Miss Gruneklee signed into Nagarjun the previous day but did not sign out.

"It seems that there is a serial killer," said Supt Adhikari. "We've found things there from both ladies and it seems the culprit is the same."

The case has echoes of a string of murders of foreign travellers in Asia by the notorious murderer, Charles Sobhraj, in the 1970s, currently serving a life sentence in Nepal.

Among Sobhraj's 20 suspected victims, two were killed in Kathmandu. He was finally tracked down following an investigation by a Dutch diplomat in Thailand.

No bodies have been found in the latest case, and there is no evidence that, like Sobhraj, the killer is a foreigner.

German forensic experts have arrived in Kathmandu to help the investigation after what has been widely criticised as an inadequate response by local officials.

The Nagarjun Forest grows on a 6,800ft hill with a Buddhist shrine on the summit. The area is a royal retreat, surrounded by a high wall and with military guards at the entrance.

After the French ambassador's grisly discoveries an army search of the area found nothing.

A second search of the area by the French found Miss Henry's keys, pages from her passport, Miss Gruneklee's driving licence and other personal effects of both women scattered in the area.

Supt Adhikari insists that the police are now in control. But doubts continue to plague the inquiry.

The senior officer who was leading the hunt was promoted to a new post on Wednesday and no one is now in charge. Charles Sobhraj, a French national of Vietnamese-Indian descent, is suspected of at least 20 murders along the old Asian Hippy Trail in the 1970s.

From 1976 he served 20 years in jail in India for robbery and the non-fatal poisoning of a group of tourists.

He was not convicted of murder until 2004, after he was arrested in Nepal.
